Install Zotero 10 on Windows

  1. 1

    Download the installer

From the download page, choose Download for Windows · 10.0. Expect about 104 MB and the name Zotero-10.0_x64_setup.exe.

  2. 2

    Run setup

Open the EXE and follow the prompts. Installing over an older version keeps your existing library.

  3. 3

    Confirm the library opens

Launch Zotero and check that My Library appears. No account is required for local use.

  4. 4

Update later from inside the app

Use Help / Check for Updates when a newer build is available.

Set up the browser Connector

  1. 1

    Install the desktop app first

The Connector talks to the running Zotero client when you save.

  2. 2

Add the extension for your browser

Chrome, Edge, or Firefox via the Connector download. Safari uses the connector bundled with Zotero (enable it in Safari Extensions).

  3. 3

    Pin the toolbar button

Keep Save to Zotero visible so you do not hunt for it mid-session.

  4. 4

Test on a known publisher page

Open an article page and save once. Confirm the item appears in Zotero with sensible metadata.

If saving fails, confirm Zotero is open and that the Connector version matches a supported browser. See collect features.

Collections vs tags

A common early complaint is that the library feels crowded. Use collections for project structure (chapters, courses) and tags for themes that span folders.

Saved searches act like smart folders. In Zotero 10 you can also select multiple collections to review items together and batch-edit fields.

Sync problems

  1. 1

    Confirm you meant to sync

Local libraries work without an account. Sync is optional.

  2. 2

    Sign in under Account settings

Zotero 10 renames the Sync pane to Account. Verify username and that sync is enabled for the right libraries.

  3. 3

    Check file storage quota

Metadata may sync while PDF attachment sync stops when free file storage is full. Free up space or adjust what you sync.

  4. 4

    Resolve conflicts calmly

If the same item changed on two machines, pick the correct version and avoid editing both copies offline for long stretches.

Word or LibreOffice plugin

  1. 1

    Confirm supported office versions

See the table on the download requirements section.

  2. 2

    Install or reinstall from Zotero

Use the word processor plugin installer inside Zotero. On Mac LibreOffice, install the JDK when prompted.

  3. 3

    Restart the word processor

Look for Zotero commands in the ribbon or menus after restart.

  4. 4

Keep Zotero running while you cite

The plugin expects the desktop app to be available for citation lookups.

Antivirus warnings

Security tools sometimes flag new EXE installers before global reputation updates. That does not by itself prove malware.

  1. 1

    Match version and filename

Confirm Zotero 10.0 and Zotero-10.0_x64_setup.exe (or the macOS/Linux package you chose).

  2. 2

    Check approximate size

Windows x64 builds are reported around 104 MB. A tiny stub or oddly renamed file deserves extra caution.

  3. 3

    Compare hashes when provided

If your download host lists SHA-256, verify before allowing the file.

  4. 4

Submit a false-positive report if needed

After verification, whitelist only the installer you checked. Read more on trust and security.

Best practices

  • Back up your Zotero data directory on a schedule, especially before major upgrades.
  • Prefer collections for projects and tags for cross-cutting themes.
  • Install both the desktop app and the Connector; one without the other limits capture.
  • For shared courses, use a group library instead of emailing RIS files endlessly.
  • If Zotero feels like too much for a single bibliography, a lighter web bibliography tool may fit better for that narrow task.
